French Enamel and Diamond Banjo Brooch, circa 1860Regular price $ 5,500.00
A beautifully detailed gold French banjo brooch with a rose diamond and silver set flower, perhaps an amaryllis, blooming from the head of the banjo through a perfectly circular hole on the right side. The head of the banjo is also decorated with red and green enamel to give the impression of an amaryllis flower. The banjo also has a French gold mark on the catch.
The amaryllis was associated with love, passion, and beauty and took its name from the nymph Amaryllis who fell in unrequited love with the shepherd Alteo.
