Miner's Shovel Brooch, circa 1870sRegular price $ 580.00
Lovely gold miner's brooch (also called a "digger's brooch") depicting a shovel excavating a minuscule nugget of gold with an original nugget bound to the shaft by a piece of gold detailed to mimic rope.
Such brooches were a popular commemorative gifts at sites of major gold strikes in Australia, the United States, and South Africa. Miners would often present these brooches to their sweethearts, which would depict a shovel and other mining tools as well as an original nugget the miner found, to celebrated their discovery (see Young's 1987 article on Westralian Mining Brooches for a further summary of the practice).
